Koraput is the land of enchanting beauty is well known for its exquisite handicrafts. It has a rich tradition of handicrafts, unique in its characteristics that have evolved along with its art & sculpture, temple architecture, folk art, dance & music. The craftsmanship is unique for its technical perfection and artistic excellence. Having an ancient tradition of making splendid pieces of art by hands Odia artists have long been presenting their awe-inspiring masterpieces to the world. Age has not withered the beauty and dynamic diversity of Koraput’s traditional arts and crafts. Even today, despite the industrial revolution and availability of cheap machine-made products the handicraft industry has not only survived but also flourished amidst stiff competition.
Almost every Block & ULB of the District makes a rich contribution to the numerous ranges of handcrafted articles available. Each article is a class by itself and is also perceived as painstaking self-expression of the artisan and the locale culture. As an industry it is highly labor-intensive and decentralized, being spread all over the district in rural and urban areas, and has contributed significantly to employment and also to GDP of the District. Also, many artisans are engaged in certain crafts work on a part-time basis.
A huge potential exists in the district for economic development in rural areas through employment and income generation by promoting handicrafts. Next to the handloom sector, they are the major providers of employment in the non-farm sector. Based on an assessment of the socio-economic status, employment, and market position, the handicrafts of Odisha, which are 55 in number, maybe broadly categorized under the following heads:
In Koraput district major Handicrafts Artisans are practice in crafts such as terracotta & clay toys, Bamboo crafts, Cloth Toys, stone carving, Paddy Craft, Patta Chitra, wood carving, Sisal Fiber, costume jewellery, papier Mache and the like. These are called popular crafts because of their good market potential and they provide employment to a large number of artisans in the district.
Administrative Set-up
The Assistant Director (Handicrafts), Koraput-Jeypore under the Administrative control the Directorate of Handicrafts, Odisha, Bhubaneswar and Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts Department is looking after promotion and development of handicrafts industries in the district with the following mandate:

- Transform Odisha into a brand name in Handicrafts

Financial assistance is provided to handicraft artisans for construction of work-shed in order to provide safe work place with installation of machineries & storage of raw materials and finished goods in a space of 22 Sq. Metre of RCC roof with unit cost of Rs.120,000/- & Rs.1,30,000/- for non-IAP & IAP Districts respectively to increase the wage-earning capacity of the artisans.
Benefits
- - Financial Assistance of Rs.120,000/- & Rs.1,30,000/- for non-IAP & IAP Districts respectively for construction of RCC workshed of 22 Sq. mtr (240 Sq. ft.)
- - Additional amount of Rs.10000/- to the physically challenged artisan
- - Special incentives of Rs.20,000/- and Rs.10,000/- for completing construction of workshed within 3 months and 4 months respectively from date of release of 1st installment.
Eligibility
- - Applicant’s name must appear in the Survey Database of handicraft artisans.
- - Only one member of an artisan family will be eligible to get benefit under the scheme.
- - No member of the family should be a Govt. servant.
- - Annual income of the artisan must not exceed Rs.1,00,000/-.
- - Artisan should possess adequate land record in his / her name / spouse / parents name for construction of the workshed.
- - At least 50% of the annual earnings of the artisan should be from his / her handicraft profession.

Financial assistance in shape of Margin Money is provided to handicraft artisans for availing bank finance to set up own production units with project cost up to Rs.1.00 lakh (1,00,000)

- Margin Money (Subsidy) @20% of the Project cost (Maximum Rs.20,000/-) is provided

- - The artisan should not be a defaulter to any bank / financial institution.

- - He/ She should have inclination/ interest towards the craft
- - He/ She should have not been trained under any other similar scheme in Handicraft Sector

This scheme envisages self-employment opportunities in SHG mode within a cluster of radius of 3.5 KMs with at least 30 artisans practicing the same craft. The members’ strength of each SHG shall be 10 to 20.

- - Each SHG must have membership strength of 10 to 20.
- - The members of SHGs should not be benefitted under Craft Village / AHVY or any other similar scheme.
